Looking Back At 2013

Apart from visiting some really cool cities, New York City, Montreal and Toronto, I spent the majority of last year writing a book.
My book is about growing food in a place where winter lasts seven long months, AKA my back yard. The first third of the book is all about maximizing the soil, making it healthy so it grows big strong crops. In the the second third I tell you what to plant, how to grow it, harvest it and store it for the long winter. The last third of the book has recipes and ideas for preparing the food you’ve grown for the table.
It’s due to come out in May 2014.

UPDATE: You can read more about my book, GROWING FOOD IN A SHORT SEASON Sustainable, Organic Cold-Climate Gardening, at the Douglas and McIntyre site.

This photo was taken yesterday from the end of the driveway.

  1. My goodness those trees are good at bending. That's quite the snow. Exciting news about your book!

  2. Oh, I am so excited about your book! It will be awesome to have a book written by someone who lives in the same neck of the woods as I do! I hope you will let us know where we can buy it when it comes out.

  3. Can't wait to see your book Melanie. There is such a lack of garden books for people growing in northern climates, this is going to be a great addition to people's libraries.

  4. Congratulations on your book, Melanie! I bet people in the higher elevations down here could use a book like that too.
