Thinking about sheet mulching as an easy way to make a garden has got me all fired up about hugelkultur (hill culture). It’s another way of making a garden by piling compost and rotted manure on top of rotting logs.
Hugelkultur gardens have all the benefits of sheet mulched gardens, increased fertility, water retention, and all the heat released as the compost rots get the plants and seeds growing faster.
Hugelkultur gardens are instant raised beds, meaning the snow melts faster, the soil dries out faster and you can get the garden planted earlier. This has nothing to do with winning competitions. Its ensures we northern, short season gardeners are able to harvest a crop.
Of course rotting logs may be hard to find, even so you should read this piece about Hugelkultur
