Indoor Garden Update

My aloe plant is is going to flower again. Look closely at the photo. There are two flower spikes. I knew Aloe plants flowered because I saw them flowering in gardens when I was in California. What surprised me is that an aloe plant, growing in a pot, indoors in my house, would flower. I have another, bigger Aloe plant, Aloe vera. It has never flowered. It may need more sunshine and it may need to be potbound.

The Laurus nobilis, bay plant, is putting out new leaves. Maybe it’s optimistic that the ground is going to unfreeze earlier than usual, the snow melt, and the mercury remain above zero. Who can blame it, the day time highs have been routinely above zero. Hey weather I still have lots of skiing to do yet, thanks.

As you can see the Amaryllis is not flowering, despite me doing everything right? When it’s warm enough I’m going to plant it outside in the garden, just to make sure that when I stuff it back into its pot, to bring it back indoors, it will truly be potbound.
I’ve harvested the Cymbopogon, lemon grass, twice, the bits I chopped off are growing new leaves. Before I take it back outside I’m going to transplant it to a bigger pot. I want it to grow bigger so I can harvest more of it.

My Rosmarinus officinalis, rosemary, is six years old. It’s very woody but it does put out new tender growth and flowers, regularly.

Persistence pays off. There's a bud on my amaryllis.Recent Update: Since I wrote this post my amaryllis has produced a bud. Yay!.

  1. A flowering aloe. Wow. That is great. I can't get my amaryllis to bloom either. Sigh. I like that lemon grass and your rosemary. My rosemary has survived two winters inside now. Maybe I've gotten that one figured out. Enjoy seeing what you have growing. Wish we had your snow!

  2. Flowering aloe is so very pretty. What a nice treat in the middle of winter! I love lemon grass-though I've never cooked with it.

    1. Yes it is a treat to have the aloe bloom, although it reminds me I need to plan a winter holiday down south.

  3. I've never seen an aloe flower indoors either. Actually i've never seen one flower at all in person. It must have quite a bit of warm sun in that window.

    1. Yes it faces south. During the winter we depend on that window and the other southfacing windows to heat the house, during the day, when it's sunny :) Works great!

  4. Yes I've seen them flower before indoors. Have you ever tried to grow a Haworthia Melanie?

Oh there must be a wonderful scent from that Rosemary!

  5. Rosie I don't even know what a Haworthia is? sounds intriguing.

  6. Your amaryllis hasn't accumulated enough food in the bulb to be ready for flowering. It needs more vigorous leaves at vegetative stage, meaning fertilizer and mostly sunlight before dormancy.
